Your Outpatient consultation
When a GP refers a patient to the hospital, this request is received by the Central Booking Service which logs the referral and ensures all the necessary information is there for the clinical services to decide which clinic a patient should attend. The letter inviting a patient to book an appointment at the relevant clinic and the letter confirming the appointment time are sent out by Outpatient Clinic Service.
Your referral from your GP will be received by our Central Booking Service who will get the referral triaged by the relevant clinical services to assess which clinic and when the you should attend. An appointment letter will then be sent out to you confirming the date and time of the appointment.

Checking in for your Outpatient Appointment:
You can use the self-check-in booths in some clinic areas, so you don’t have to queue at reception. You can also change your personal details at these booths. If you have any queries, or problems checking in at the booths, please ask our receptionist or volunteers for help..
How long will I have to wait?
- Please allow at least two hours for your appointment.
- You might need to an X-ray or other tests afterwards. We will try to arrange these on the same day, so you may need to wait longer.
- Please tell the receptionist if you need to leave before you have your tests so they can be rescheduled.
- We strive to see people at the given appointment time, but sometimes your appointment may be delayed. We are sorry if this causes problems but sometimes our staff face urgent or complex issues that can cause overruns

Making, changing or cancelling an appointment
When patients do not attend their clinic appointments, and don’t tell us in advance, it has a huge impact – costing the NHS money, valuable time and also affecting other patients. It means someone else misses out and stops us reducing waiting lists. Please tell us if you are not going to attend an appointment, so other patients requiring hospital treatment can be seen by our medical teams.
How to change or cancel your appointment

- Use our online appointment amendment form https://www.stgeorges.nhs.uk/patients-and- visitors/appointment/outpatients-2/change-your-appointment-2/. We will email you back the next working day, you will also receive a message once the request has been made on line
If you fail to attend your appointment without notifying us beforehand, you could be discharged. This means you will need to return to your GP or Consultant for another referral if you do need to attend a clinic – so you could lose time too.
If you need an x-ray, ultrasound, MRI or CT scan the doctor will send a request to the Radiology team. In some cases, such as ‘one-stop’ clinics you may have your investigation carried out on the same day and given the result to take back to your clinic. For all other clinics an appointment will be sent to your home address or you will receive a call from the Radiology department.
If you need a non-urgent prescription the doctor will usually give you a form to take to your GP. If your prescription is required urgently, or if the medicine is normally only available from the Hospital Pharmacy, the clinic doctor will give you a prescription to take to the Hospital Pharmacy. Patient transport at St George’s Hospital and St John’s Therapy Centre
Non-emergency patient transport
This is the ambulance service that transports some patients to and from hospital. It is only provided for patients who have very specific needs. Patients’ needs will be reviewed each time they come to hospital.
Patients are assessed by the patient transport assessment and booking team using national Department of Health guidelines. Please call 020 8725 0808 for more information.
Help with travel costs
If you are on a low income or benefits you might be entitled to reclaim your public transport costs to and from the hospital under the Healthcare Travel Cost Scheme. Please call the hospital cashier on 020 8725 1632 or see The Department of Health leaflet HC12 or by calling 0845 850 1166.

If you wish to be treated as a private patient, please let your doctor know when they make the referral to the hospital. The Private Patient Team can be contacted on 020 8725 3579 or via e-mail on Private.firstname.lastname@example.org and will be happy to support and advise you. The Information We Collect About You And How It Is Used?
The Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA) provides principles under which all organisations, including the NHS, operate when handling personal data.
It also gives members of the public the statutory right of access to personal data related to themselves. In particular, there is provision for you to see your own medical records.
What information we hold?
- Basic details about you, such as address, date of birth, next of kin and you GP
- You medical conditions
- Treatment provided and contact you have had with the Trust
- Results of investigations, such as X-ray and laboratory tests
- Reports about your health and the care you need
- Relevant information from other health professionals
- Your ethnic origin, in order to help in planning services and ensuring equal access

Who do we share information with?
We will share information with other parts of the NHS to support your healthcare needs, In particular we will inform your GP of your progress unless you ask us not to. We may also share you information with other organisations where it may benefit you, for example with Social Services.
To assist in the management of the health service, and to protect the health of the general public we may share information with other parts of the NHS or with other public sector organisations. We are also required by law to report certain information to the appropriate authorities, for example notification of new births.
Whenever we share information with other organisations we will do this line with the Data Protection Act (1998) and the NHS Confidentiality Code of Practice (2003).
We do not share information, in the ways described above, regarding treatment you may have received in the specialities of Sexually Transmitted Infections and Human Fertilisation and Embryology.
Comments, Suggestions and Complaints
We hope you are satisfied with the care you receive as an outpatient at St George’s Hospital.
We welcome any comments you may have about our outpatient’s service and facilities. Things do sometimes go wrong despite our best intentions and we want to know when problems arise so we can put them right. If you want to make a comment, suggestion or a complaint, we suggest that in the first instance you:
- Speak to the nurse in charge of your Outpatient clinic.
- Speak to the nurse manager in charge of the Outpatients department.
- Speak to our Patient Advice & Liaison service who aim to help resolve problems or concerns. They are based in the main corridor between Grosvenor and Lanesborough Wing near the lift foyer or can be contacted between 8am and 8pm Monday to Friday on 020 8725 2453.

Recording Your Needs
It is helpful for our staff to keep a record of your needs to enable us to give you any assistance you may require for future appointments. Therefore, with your consent, this will be indicated on your health records with, for example, a symbol for visual or hearing impairment.
We aim to provide interpreting services for patients for whom English is not a first language. Please note that it is important that you give us as much notice as possible to enable us to provide this service. Your GP will do this for your first appointment, for follow up appointments the clinic receptionist will book the interpreter for you.
