St George’s at the forefront of medical innovation as its staff pioneers a groundbreaking technique in thyroid surgery, promising patients a scarless experience with shorter recovery times.

The innovative procedure, known as Trans-Oral Endoscopic Thyroid and Parathyroid surgery via Vestibular Approach (TOETVA – TOEPVA), marks a significant advancement in thyroid and parathyroid surgeries. This approach eliminates the need for a midline neck scar and offers patients a faster post-operative recovery period, enabling them to resume normal activities with reduced pain and discomfort.

We recently achieved a milestone by becoming the first medical facility in London to perform this revolutionary technique. Under the guidance of Professor Leonardo Rangel, Chief Director and head and neck consultant at the State University of Rio de Janeiro, the hospital’s surgical team successfully treated a wide range of thyroid conditions transorally, including benign and malignant thyroid lesions, as well as parathyroid adenoma.

Led by Head and Neck, Robotic, and Thyroid Consultant Mr. Georgios Oikonomou, along with consultants Mr. Enyi Ofo and Mr. Dimitrios Tsironis, the team executed the surgeries with precision and expertise. The first-of-its-kind procedure for thyroid cancer was performed on a patient with a Thy2c nodule, resulting in complete resection margins and eliminating the need for further treatment.

This groundbreaking achievement not only demonstrates St. George’s commitment to advancing medical care but also opens up new possibilities for patients seeking minimally invasive surgical options for thyroid and parathyroid conditions. Patients interested in learning more about this procedure or considering it as a treatment option for thyroid disease are encouraged to contact Mr. Oikonomou’s secretary, Anne Galt, for further information.

St. George’s Hospital continues to lead the way in medical innovation, offering patients cutting-edge treatments and compassionate care.
