Breastfeeding Awareness Week 2011
St George’s Healthcare staff will be out in force at Southside Shopping Centre between 10.30 and 15.00hrs on Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th June 2011 to help Wandsworth’s shoppers with all their breastfeeding queries as part of Breastfeeding Awareness Week 2011 and hand out breastfeeding information and freebies.
A team of health visitors, nursery and community nurses and dieticians will be running an information stand signposting all the breastfeeding support available for people in Wandsworth and answering any questions Wandsworth’s shoppers have about breastfeeding.
Helen Simpson, breastfeeding specialist health visitor, said: “Many mothers and babies breastfeed well from the beginning but for others it can take a little longer to learn. Midwives, health visitors and nursery and community nurses can provide mums with information, support and encouragement.”
The St George’s Healthcare health visiting teams have established a series of breastfeeding groups across the borough to support new mums. These groups are for socialising and meeting other mums, no matter what age or stage of breastfeeding. A health professional or peer supporter is on hand at each group to answer questions on breastfeeding. The groups give mums a chance to get out the house and meet other mums in a friendly and informal environment, are free, and you do not have to book, just drop-in during the open hours.
In addition to the breastfeeding groups a growing number of breastfeeding welcome cafés and restaurants in Wandsworth have been established over the last 18 months to make new mums feel more at ease when breastfeeding whilst out and about. These establishments have been approved by the local NHS as breastfeeding friendly and should provide a comfortable environment in which young mums can breastfeed. Look out for the Breastfeeding Welcome badge in the window of your local eatery.
