This postgraduate course will be helpful to senior doctors who are interested in exploring and developing their own communication skills at an advanced level. In addition, it will be of interest to those who are involved in clinical workplace teaching. It gives a brief overview of the teaching and learning of clinical communication at St George’s.

Participants are asked to bring communication challenges / issues from their clinical workplace and will work in small groups with 4 or 5 other senior doctors and 2 experienced facilitators. The plenary morning is followed by 1.5 days of protected time slots. During the 2 days you will work through a range of scenarios and have actors and cameras at your disposal.

Previous participants have worked on a wide range of topics, including conflicts with colleagues; breaking bad news; communication challenges with junior doctors; difficult encounters with patients and relatives; issue of bullying, racism and sexism; giving effective feedback; practicing bedside teaching.

This off-site course is facilitated by experienced clinical communication lecturers from the Centre for Clinical Education and is 100% confidential. It is a safe place to explore complex and challenging issues often faced by Consultants, where you will receive honest feedback and the opportunity to explore various models of communication.
