Constipation self-care advice

Try to take gentle exercise, if possible. It will help to keep your bowels moving. If able, brisk walking for at least 30 minutes, three times per week, is conducive to a more normal bowel routine. Exercise has also been shown to increase energy levels, so you may gradually feel better and be able to do a little more.

Eat food high in fibre such as: fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, pulses, and wholemeal bread, etc. (only if you are not allergic to these food types).

Drink plenty of water (unless advised not to do so by a healthcare professional).

Take medication as prescribed from your doctor. Complementary and alternative therapies may help, but always consult with your chemotherapy care team about it.

Please contact your chemotherapy nurse or telephone the AOS help line on 0783 114 7653 if:

  • Your bowels have not moved for more than 2 days, despite taking your regular and “as needed” prescribed medication
  • you are experiencing new abdominal pain
  • if your abdomen is swollen and /or you are not passing wind.
