Mouth Soreness (Stomatitis)

Questions?

  • How many days?
  • Is there evidence of mouth ulcers?
  • Is there evidence of infection?
  • Are they able to eat/drink?
  • Assess patient’s urinary output.

Grade 1 (Green)

  • Painless ulcers, erythema
  • Mild soreness
  • Able to eat/drink

Advice

  • Give advice regarding oral hygiene including use of mouthwash
  • Good tips are available on the sore mouth self-care advice page
  • Encourage the patient to inform their chemotherapy team at their next appointment

Grade 2 (Amber)

Painful erythema, oedema or ulcers but can eat/drink.

Grade 3 (Red)

Painful erythema, difficulty with eating and drinking and/or mucosal necrosis.
Patient may require parenteral or enteral support.
