Mouth Soreness (Stomatitis)
Questions?
- How many days?
- Is there evidence of mouth ulcers?
- Is there evidence of infection?
- Are they able to eat/drink?
- Assess patient’s urinary output.
Grade 1 (Green)
- Painless ulcers, erythema
- Mild soreness
- Able to eat/drink
Advice
- Give advice regarding oral hygiene including use of mouthwash
- Good tips are available on the sore mouth self-care advice page
- Encourage the patient to inform their chemotherapy team at their next appointment
Grade 2 (Amber)
Painful erythema, oedema or ulcers but can eat/drink.

Grade 3 (Red)
Painful erythema, difficulty with eating and drinking and/or mucosal necrosis.
