Orthotics clinic at Queen Mary’s Hospital
The orthotics clinic is a multidisciplinary clinic run by a physiotherapist and an orthotist. The function of the clinic is to assess and provide patients with appropriate orthoses to help improve their mobility and function. A wide variety of orthoses are provided; ranging from insoles for shoes, to bespoke ankle and foot splints to stabilise the foot when standing or walking.
The clinic receives referrals from GPs and consultant neurologists and links in with the spasticity clinic, to ensure co-ordinated and timely interventions.
Spasticity clinic at Queen Mary’s Hospital
The spasticity clinic is a multidisciplinary clinic run by the consultant in neurorehabilitation and an extended scope physiotherapy practitioner in spasticity management. There are three clinics per week and one runs alongside the orthotic clinic to allow the two clinics to work cohesively for patients requiring both services.
Referrals for the spasticity clinic are taken from GPs, consultant neurologists, stroke physicians, neurosurgeons, orthopaedic surgeons and specialist nurses. Community therapy teams are welcome to refer to us following agreement by the patient’s GP.
The catchment area for the clinic is large, covering local boroughs and Surrey, Sussex, Kent and Hampshire. There is close liaison between the spasticity clinic and the local therapy teams to allow a coordinated approach to patient care and to ensure that the use of splinting, and other treatment modalities are available if necessary.
Within the service, we offer management of spasticity, using all available treatment modalities including oral medication, focal management with Botulinum Toxin or Phenol Neurolysis, and Intrathecal Baclofen or Intrathecal Phenol.
We also have close links with the hand surgery service, orthopaedic service and the FES service at Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton for other management options.
