The thumb contains two strong supporting ligaments, located in the web space between the thumb and the index finger (see picture). The ligaments can be damaged if the thumb is forced away from your hand, which may cause pain and/or instability at this joint.

Hand therapy treatment will often involve a period of splinting to allow the ligament to heal, followed by specific exercises to regain movement and function.
