Adult services
Jenner Wing
The hand therapy team is located within the Therapies Department on the Ground Floor of Jenner Wing . New patient appointments for GP and consultant clinic referrals are held in this location. In addition, follow up appointments for hand therapy are also held here unless your therapist has given you different information.
Hand Unit
Following surgery, your first appointment with the hand therapy team will be undertaken in the Hand Unit in conjunction with our nursing team.
The Hand Unit is located between the Day Surgery Unit and the Rose Centre on the Perimeter road.
You will be advised where to attend in your appointment letter or over the phone when confirming your appointment.
Consultant appointments and nurse dressing appointments are held in the Hand Unit.
Paediatric services
Dragon Centre
The Dragon Centre is the Trust’s specialist outpatient clinic area for paediatric services. The hand therapy team provide support to the plastics trauma and congenital hand clinics, and also run their own weekly paediatric hand therapy clinic in the Dragon Centre.
All children under the age of 14 must been seen and treated in the Dragon Centre. Children between the ages of 14 and 16 may be seen and treated in hand therapy in St James’ Wing; your therapist will advise you on the correct location if this is the case.

What do I need to bring with me?

• Any splints that you may have
What if I need an interpreter or have difficulty getting to/from hospital?
If you think you need an interpreter or hospital transport, please talk to a member of the team as soon as possible.
What if I am late or cannot attend?
If you are unable to attend, please give at least 24 hours’ notice. This allows us to offer your appointment to another patient.
If you attend late for your appointment, we cannot guarantee that you will be seen and you may have to arrange an alternative appointment.
If you do not attend your appointment and do not contact us, you may be discharged from the hand therapy service as per the St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust access to treat policy.
If you are discharged, you will need a new referral from your GP or consultant for further treatment.
How long will appointments be?
Please allow up to 60 minutes for your first appointment and 30 minutes for follow-up appointments.
Will I be seen by students or involved in research?
As a teaching hospital, St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust regularly trains staff and students and carries out research to help us find out more about conditions and treatments. If you are involved in either of these, then we will always discuss this with you first.
If you would prefer not to be involved in research or would not like students to be present during your appointment, please let your therapist know. This will not affect your care in any way.
Virtual consultations
Our service provides also video and telephone consultations. Patients can have a set appointment with their therapist using their telephone or video camera.
This can save you time as you will not need to travel for a face-to-face appointment. It will help to stop infections spreading such as coronavirus (COVID-19).
If your therapist recommends you have a video or telephone appointment, you will get a text reminder and a letter with the details and the relevant link for the appointment.
