Professional Profile

Ambroise Muchembled is a Consultant in Adult Critical Care at St George’s Hospital. He graduated from Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ School of Medicine and undertook initial training in Emergency Medicine and Anaesthetics. As part of the pan-London higher Intensive Care Medicine programme he has worked at Guy’s and St Thomas’, St Mary’s, and King’s College Hospitals, as well as St George’s, acquiring broad experience across general and specialist Intensive Care disciplines. He undertook his special skills year in Critical Care Echocardiography at an ECMO centre.

Dr Muchembled has had a longstanding interest in multi-professional clinical education, and has undertaken simulation education fellowships at the St George’s Advanced Patient Simulation and Skills Centre (GAPS), and Kingston Hospital. He instructs on a number of resuscitation and trauma courses and is a medical director for Advanced Life Support courses. Ambroise has substantial experience in out-of-hospital medical care, especially in crowds and at mass gatherings. He retains particular interests in the organisation of NHS ambulance services and the provision of medical care in less permissive environments, and supports a volunteer crowd medicine team in London.

Amongst other clinical and educational projects, Dr Muchembled has worked on the development and delivery of interfacility transfer training. He helped set up and run the Adult Critical Care Transfer Service for the South West London Integrated Care System during Covid-19, acting as its Deputy Lead Intensivist, and latterly as Governance Lead.
