Professional profile

Ms Yael Gelfer had completed her Higher Surgical Training in Trauma & Orthopaedics in 2010. She has completed her Paediatric Orthopaedic training at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and has been working as a Consultant at St Georges Hospital since 2013. She is the clinical lead for the Ponseti and Neurodisability services and the research lead for the Paediatric Orthopaedic service.

Ms Gelfer is an honorary senior lecturer at St Georges University of London (SGUL) and holds a PhD from the University of Surrey (2008). She is the Teaching Program Director (TPD) for Foundation Year 2 at South Thames Foundation School and an Educational Supervisor for foundation doctors.

Ms Gelfer is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS), British Orthopaedic association (BOA), European Paediatric Orthopaedic Society (EPOS), British Society for Children’s Orthopaedic Surgery (BSCOS) and the British Society for Surgery in Cerebral Palsy (BSSCP). She is the BOA London Consultant representative for Culture and Diversity.

She is an Associate Editor for Paediatrics in EFORT Open Reviews Journal, a member of the BSCOS scientific committee, a past member of the EPOS scientific committee, a reviewer of various orthopaedic journals and the chair of the BSCOS consensus group for Toe Walking management.

Research interests

Clubfoot, DDH, Neuromuscular disorder, Establishing Core Outcome Set for research and treatment and consensus statements for treatment.

Ms Gelfer’s research focus has been developing a core outcome set (COS) for research and treatment in clubfoot and spinal dysraphism, various aspects of clubfoot management, the non-idiopathic foot, identifying risk factors for relapse, delivering a physiotherapy led Ponseti service, managing residual equinus in clubfoot and developing a British consensus statement for primary treatment of clubfoot. She is currently leading a global collaboration for clubfoot research and training looking into long term outcomes of clubfoot Ponseti treatment. She is involved with Global Clubfoot Initiative Ponseti courses and research into outcome validity in High and Low/Middle-income countries. Her current projects are the CoCo (Core Outcome Club FOot) study (a multi-centre study determining the outcomes of idiopathic clubfoot management in school age children), establishing consensus statement for treatment of Toe Walking and establishing treatment standards for the pulseless paediatric elbow supracondylar fractures and for paediatric tourniquet use.
