St George's Healthcare is a leading centre for kidney transplantation and renal failure.
The team are pioneers in their field, constantly pushing the boundaries in medical care to provide renal patients with a full range of life-saving and groundbreaking treatments and surgical procedures.
All kidneys from live donors are now removed using state-of-the-art keyhole surgery techniques, which reduces the amount of time a donor has to spend in hospital and shortens the convalescence period from 3 months to 1 month.
The remainder of work in the unit consists of general surgery procedures such as hernia repairs, parathyroidectomies and the removal of abnormal and diseased kidneys.
Since it was set up in 1994, the unit has grown in strength, providing outstanding quality of care and ground-breaking treatments for people suffering from renal failure.
The renal team consists of four consultant surgeons and four junior surgeons. The service is also supported by a team of experienced nurses who provide patient education and support in dialysis access and transplantation.
It serves a population of around 3.2 million living in South West London, Surrey and Sussex. It also provides a service to two other renal units at St Helier Hospital in Carshalton, and the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.
