Podiatry

A podiatrist (also known as a chiropodist) is a health professional who deals with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of medical and surgical conditions of the feet and lower limbs.

The Wandsworth Podiatry Department aims to provide the best possible podiatric care by having well equipped services provided in the right environment, being delivered by enthusiastic and motivated staff.

Community clinics

These are offered at a variety of sites around Wandsworth and provide routine Podiatric treatments including callus & corn treatments, foot care & diabetic advice, verrucae treatments, wound care, simple biomechanics. They will also refer on to our specialist services if further investigation is required.

Home visits

These appointments are only arranged for patients who are house-bound. At the initial appointment, each patient will undergo a mobility assessment. Appropriate transport can be provided for those patients who are able to attend clinic, but have restricted mobility.

Nail surgery

These clinics involve the removal of part or all, of the affected in-growing toe nail, under a local anaesthetic.

Eligibility

You must be registered with a GP in the Wandsworth area.

Eligibility for Podiatric treatment is based on Podiatric need, ie a problem that cannot be treated by the individual concerned. This need will be assessed on an individual basis, it is not based on age or specific to certain medical conditions, such as diabetes.

Nail care will only be provided to patients who have vascular or neurological complications, are receiving anti-coagulant therapy or have a disability that prevents them caring for their own feet. If you are not eligible for the service we will suggest the most appropriate action to help with your problem, including nail care advice.

Referrals

Referrals are accepted from GPs, Healthcare professionals and self-referrals for community clinics, home visits, nail surgery and diabetic ulcer clinic. However, referrals to our Biomechanics and Podiatric surgery services will only be accepted from your GP, Podiatrist or other healthcare professional.
