Staff benefits

Easy access to central London

Our hospitals are based in southwest London and are ideally situated for travelling to central London.

St George's Hospital is five minutes walk from Tooting Broadway tube station and within 25 minutes you can be enjoying all the west end of London has to offer.

The Trust is well serviced by public transport, with extensive bus services and nearby mainline train stations which offer easy access to the surrounding areas and shopping centres, such as Kingston, Wimbledon and Croydon.

Assistance with travel costs

We offer all our staff the option of an interest free season ticket loan to help purchase an annual season ticket or a business parking permit from Wandsworth Borough Council.

Any permanent member of staff can apply. This allows you to benefit from the savings available when you purchase an annual season ticket and the loan is paid back over the course of the year via payroll deductions.

Excellent sports and leisure facilities

As an alternative to travelling to the west end, Tooting offers a wide range of restaurants and a growing number of cafes. There is a branch of Sainsbury's beside the tube station, but for more serious shopping, Wimbledon has branches of all the main high street stores.

Wimbledon Village offers a village atmosphere in London, again with every kind of restaurant on offer. Of course the tennis courts at the All England club are nearby, and for 2 weeks every year Wimbledon plays host to the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament.

Furthermore, southwest London has a number of open commons and parks, with Wimbledon Common, Wandsworth Common and Richmond Park all nearby.

The Robert Lowe Sports Centre, situated on the St George's Hospital site, offers a large sports hall big enough to host three badminton courts, five-a-side football and many other activities. It also has three squash courts, two aerobics rooms, one fixed weights room and a free weights room. Separate men’s and women’s changing rooms with showers are also provided. To find out more about the Robert Lowe Sports Centre, visit www.robertlowe.sgul.ac.uk.

The nearby and recently refurbished Tooting Leisure Centre offers further sports and fitness facilities, including a swimming pool, modern equipped gym and various classes and clubs.

General facilities

St George's Hospital offers an on-site branch of Natwest, whilst all Trust sites have cash point machines available. Other facilities on-site include a newsagent, gift shop and florist.

St George's Hospital opened the first hospital-based M&S Simply Food store and M&S Cafe in March 2009. Situated in the main entrance the 3,000sq ft M&S Simply Food store and 24-seater M&S Cafe provides more choice for staff and hospital visitors. The caf? serves a range of refreshments including hot food, fair-trade tea and coffee, freshly baked cakes and sandwiches, while the store offers more than 900 M&S Simply Food product lines, including pre-prepared meals, snacks, sandwiches and flowers. The store is open seven days a week from 7am to 11pm.

Staff restaurant and internet cafe

St George's Hosptital's excellent restaurant offers both staff and the general public a wide range of hot meals, salads, sandwiches and drinks with long opening hours to accommodate different shift patterns. Plus, all members of staff can use our internet cafe free of charge.

Staff counselling service

Our professional counselling service provides staff with free advice and counselling for a variety of issues such as stress, loss or bereavement, work difficulties and personal issues. This service is strictly confidential, and our counsellors offer flexibility in appointments where possible to accommodate different working schedules.

Accommodation

St George's Healthcare currently offers residential accommodation for staff. All applications for accommodation are weighted against set criteria. St George's Grove is situated one mile from the hospital and is currently in the stages of redevelopment. This is being done in partnership with Thames Valley Housing Association and the Construction Company Inspace Partnerships.

Following the completion of the project, which is estimated to be early 2011, the Grove will provide 557 flats to rent and 78 shared ownership flats.

Staff have the option of joining the NHS Pension Scheme. This Scheme has the full support of NHS Trade Unions and professional bodies. Further details are available from Recruitment Services or from Pensions on 020 8725 3995.

Childcare facilities

St George's Healthcare offers a nursery for staff with children between the ages of 3 months and 5 years. Allocation of nursery places is subject to availability. Employees have access to other NHS facilities and private provision that offer discounts to NHS workers. This also applies for Playschemes.

A childcare voucher scheme is also in place so parents can benefit from Tax breaks.

For enquiries regarding provision, childcare vouchers and other advice on childcare, please contact Alicia Erauncetamurguil, Childcare Co-ordinator on 020 8725 1207 or email alicia.erauncetamurguil@stgeorges.nhs.uk

Cycle-2-Work scheme

The Trust has implemented a Cycle-2-Work scheme. This scheme enables staff to apply for a loan for the purchase of a bicycle and cycling equipment, which is then repaid from their salary before tax and other deductions.
