We want patients and the public to be involved in everything we do at St George's Healthcare, and try as hard as we can to give them a real voice in decision-making in local healthcare. For example, a patient representative sits on all our senior management meetings - including the ones where confidential issues are discussed.
There are many ways to get involved - from telling us what you think about your experience of our services, right through to joining the formal Wandsworth Local Involvement Network (LINk).
PPI starts with patients becoming involved with their own care. Treatment decisions that were once made by the doctors or the health professionals are now being made in partnership with the patients or their carers.
Many patients now feel informed enough about their condition to take control of their treatment decisions, while some patients still want decisions to be made by the health professionals. Patients are encouraged to have the level of involvement that they wish; access to high quality information is an important part of this process.
PPI also includes discovering what patients and the local community think about the services they have received from the Trust and what they want from services in the future. Including the views of patients and the local community in planning services is essential. How can the needs of the community be discovered and met if they are not properly consulted?
There are several ways in which we consult our patients and the public including satisfaction surveys, the running of focus groups and the Wandsworth Local Involvement Network (LINk).
At St George's Healthcare, several hospital committees have patient representatives appointed to them, who sit alongside managers and clinicians, and are involved with the monitoring and planning of hospital services.
We would like to expand the number of patients and carers who are becoming involved in developing the Trust's services.
