Declaration of compliance for the elimination of mixed sex accommodation

We are proud to confirm that mixed sex accommodation has been virtually eliminated in all our hospitals.

St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust is pleased to confirm that it is compliant with the government’s requirement to eliminate mixed-sex accommodation, except when it is in the patient’s overall best interest, or reflects their personal choice. We have the necessary facilities, resources and culture to ensure that patients who are admitted to our hospitals will only share the room where they sleep with members of the same sex, and same-sex toilets and bathrooms will be close to their bed area. Sharing with members of the opposite sex will only happen when clinically necessary for example where patients need specialist equipment such as in neurosciences, cardiac and general intensive care, coronary care, hyper acute stroke unit, and the paediatric intensive care unit. Or when patients choose to share for instance in the renal unit.

If our care should fall short of the required standard, we will report it. We have set up an audit mechanism to make sure that we do not misclassify any of our reports. We will publish the results of that audit at our patient issues committee meeting. Our performance will also be monitored at our monthly clinical quality review meeting with the commissioners.

We have particular challenges in endoscopy on the St George’s Hospital site, but we have plans to improve these facilities by building an additional toilet, this work will be completed by end April 2011. The emergency department is also being refurbished and this will impact on the clinical decision unit within the department. During the refurbishment work best efforts will be made to maintain single sex accommodation. If compliance cannot be achieved this will be reported to our commissioners and an action plan agreed.

The document below explains our mixed sex accomodation elimation compliance in more detail.
