Annual health check

Each year we are required to submit and publish our 'annual health check' (Standards for Better Health) self-assessment to the Care Quality Commission (formerly the Healthcare Commission), who regulate health services. The annual health check measures the performance and standards of all NHS trusts throughout England, using a variety of methods and provides an annual rating of their performance. By using the annual health check, the Commission aims to get a broad picture of each trust's performance.

The annual health check exists to:

Core standards

The annual health check is based on 24 core standards, covering the minimum standards that must apply to all NHS healthcare providers.

The core standards are made up of seven key areas:

  1. Safety - is it safe for patients
  2. Clinical and cost effectiveness - is it providing treatment in line with national guidelines and in the most effective way
  3. Governance - is it well run
  4. Patient focus - does it organise its services around the needs and preferences of patients
  5. Accessible and responsive care - is it easy to get the care that is needed without unreasonable delays
  6. Care environment and amenities - is the place where patients are treated well-designed and maintained
  7. Public health - does it improve, promote and protect the health of local people

The submission also includes comments from our stakeholders - such as the Local Involvement Network (LINk) and Wandsworth Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee.
