Trust Board biographies

Christopher Smallwood - Chair

Christopher has extensive NHS experience having previously been chair of Kingston Hospital NHS Trust and prior to that, chair of NHS Hounslow. He is a policy adviser to The Prince’s Charities and until 2005, was economic adviser to Barclays plc, following several years as a partner at the City consultancy Makinson Cowell. Christopher has also worked at TSB Group as strategic development director and chief economist. He was economics editor of The Sunday Times and chief economist and head of financial strategy and planning for BP. He has been an economic adviser to HM Treasury and a special adviser at the Cabinet Office. He was also, until recently, a member of the Competition Commission.

Paul Murphy - Non Executive Director

Paul joined the Trust as a Non Executive Director in May 2007. He is currently the CEO of the Jordans Ryvita Company. Before that he was responsible for the Twinings business in the UK, North America and Australia. Paul has 20 years experience in business and has lived and worked in both France and the US. He began his career in the marketing function. Paul is married and has four small children. Outside of his role on the Board he is a member of the Audit committee and the newly formed Commercial Board.

Emma Gilthorpe - Non Executive Director

Emma joined St George's Healthcare in August 2008 as a Non Executive Director. She sits on the Finance Committee, Nominations and Remuneration Committee and chairs the Risk Assurance and Compliance Committee and the Equality and Human Rights Committee.

Emma's primary career has been spent in regulatory policy. Her current role is as Regulatory Director for BAA, the airport operator. Sitting on the Executive Committee she spends much of her time working with the Regulator and Department for Transport trying to ensure an effective balance is struck between the many competing priorities. Formerly, Emma was in the communications sector for 18 years where she headed both Cable & Wireless's and BT's Group Regulatory and Public Policy functions in successive roles. This brought her into regular contact with the sector regulator, Ofcom, Government and key policy influencers. Emma was called to Bar in 1996, has a postgraduate in Marketing and took an upper second in Law and Marketing. She is married with 3 young children.

Graham Hibbert - Non Executive Director

Graham worked for Unilever for over 30 years. He was born in Manchester and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Manchester before gaining a PhD from Trinity College, Cambridge, in Meta Physics. After a year in post-doctoral research at Cambridge, he joined Unilever where he qualified as an accountant and worked in audit, finance and general management in the UK, Germany and South Africa, with roles including Finance Director and Operations Director.

Since retiring from Unilever, Dr Hibbert consults and lectures on project management, as well as chairing an umbrella organisation representing ten residents' associations and campaigning on planning and environmental matters in Guildford, where he lives.

Graham chairs the Trust's Finance and Investment Committee. He is married with three children and his interests include walking, tennis, theatre, church, travel and meeting friends.

Mike Rappolt - Non Executive Director

Mike has 40 years of international management experience including 29 years as a management and IT consultant with PA Consulting Group, where he was a main Board Director for 12 years, chaired the Audit Committee, and from which he retired in 2001. He was a Governor of Contemporary Dance Trust (The Place) for 13 years setting up and chairing the Audit Committee and was also a non-Executive Director of a small quoted IT services company for 5 years.

He is currently chairman of the Wimbledon Civic Theatre Trust and a committee member of his local residents' association. Mike joined the Board of St George's Healthcare NHS Trust as a Non-Executive Director in 2004 and he chairs the Trust's Audit Committee. Mike has two grown up sons and lives in Wimbledon with his wife Mala, a retired doctor, and their Weimaraner dog Kaiser.

Sarah Wilton - Associate Non Executive Director

Sarah lives in Putney and qualified as a chartered accountant with PricewaterhouseCoopers. She has held several senior executive positions at Lloyd’s of London, delivering major change programmes including restructuring, outsourcing, efficiency and effectiveness reviews.

Before joining St George’s Healthcare Sarah was a non executive director at NHS Wandsworth from April 2007 to December 2010, where she was chair of the Resources Committee and a member of the Audit Committee and Children’s Trust. Sarah also oversaw the integration of Community Services Wandsworth with St George’s Healthcare as co-chair of the joint NHS Wandsworth and St George’s Healthcare integration programme board.

Sarah has held non executive director appointments at two Lloyd’s agencies, Capita Managing Agency since 2004 and Hampden Agencies Limited since 2008, chairing the audit and risk committees. She is a Magistrate at Wimbledon Magistrates Court and a Trustee of the Paul D’Auria Cancer Support Centre and Merton Crossroads – Caring for Carers.

Peter Kopelman - Non Executive Director

Peter graduated from St George’s in 1974 and undertook most of his junior doctor training at St George’s Hospital. He was Vice-Principal, Queen Mary, University of London, and Deputy Warden of the Medical and Dental School (2001-06) and Dean of the Faculty of Health, University of East Anglia (2006-08).

He has been closely involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and chairs the Clinical Examining Board of the Federation of Royal Colleges of Physicians (UK) and the NIHR Academic Careers Panel; he is a member of the UK Healthcare Education Advisory Committee.

Professor Kopelman has a long-standing interest in diabetes care, nutrition and obesity, with a major research interest in obesity. He is a member of the UK Department of Health and Food Standards Agency Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition, the Department of Health Expert Panel on Obesity, and is Science Advisor to the Office of Science and Innovations Foresight Obesity Project. Additionally, he is a member of the national and international committees on nutrition and academic affairs.

Miles Scott - Chief Executive

Miles was chief executive of Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust since August 2005.

Before joining Bradford Teaching Hospitals Miles was chief executive of Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust for four years. He started his NHS career on the General Management Training Scheme in 1988 after graduating from Cambridge University with a degree in History. His career in the NHS has encompassed acute, community and mental health services, the King’s Fund and Trent Regional Office.

Miles is a regular half-marathon runner and recently completed the Great North Run. He and his wife Abbie have two children, Florence (7) and Hugo (6).

Richard Eley - Director of Finance

Richard joined St George's Healthcare in May 2008, with a wealth of public sector experience, including senior NHS Finance positions, over a period of 17 years. Before coming to St George's Healthcare, Richard was Finance Director of Heatherwood and Wexham Park NHS Foundation Trust, and prior to that was Finance Director of Thames Valley University.

He has extensive NHS experience from senior finance positions in the University Hospital of Wales NHS Trust in Cardiff. Richard has an economics degree from Cambridge and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Touche Ross. He is Chair of Chartered Accountants in Business for Thames Valley and has been president of Thames Valley Society of Chartered Accountants.

Ros Given-Wilson - Medical Director

Ros Given-Wilson has been a Consultant Radiologist at St George's Healthcare since 1989. She set up the South West London Breast Screening Service and was Director of screening for 10 years. Since then she has been Director of Radiology, Clinical Director of Diagnostics and is now one of the Trust's two Medical Directors. She has special interests in paediatric and breast imaging and runs a National breast screening Training centre delivering training in all aspects of breast imaging.

Professor Alison Robertson - Chief Nurse and Director of Operations

Alison joined St George's Healthcare in February 2010, following her post as Chief Nurse at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust. She has worked in the NHS for almost 30 years and has provided strategic leadership to the nursing and midwifery profession in several NHS Trusts, including Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Trust and Surrey & Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust. Alison has a successful record in reducing hospital acquired infections and in implementing initiatives to improve the patient experience. She has also led several successful initiatives to enhance patient safety and quality of care, setting goals and targets to achieve positive change. In April 2012 she took on the role of Director of Operations and executive lead for Service Improvement.

Alison is a registered general and sick children’s nurse and has worked in a number of positions in acute care settings. She also has a broad experience working in the community and is a qualified health visitor. In July 2010, she accepted the post of Honorary Senior Fellow within Kingston University and St George’s University of London, Faculty of Health and Social Sciences. She has also authored publications on several topics, including care for children and cystic fibrosis. In 2011 Alison was made a visiting professor within the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery, King’s College London. She is also currently vice-chair of the Association of UK University Hospitals Director of Nursing Forum.

Neal Deans - Director of Estates and Facilities

Neal joined St George's Healthcare as the Trust's Director of Estates in early 2005. He had previously been Director of Estates and Facilities at Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust and prior to this, was estates manager at Kingston Hospital, a post he held for 14 years, and saw the redevelopment of much of the site. Neal has over 25 years experience as a Chartered Surveyor, working for Local Authorities, the Royal Mail and the NHS.

Peter Jenkinson - Trust Secretary

Peter joined St George's Healthcare as Trust Secretary in June 2009 and has responsibility for corporate governance, including the corporate office, risk management and membership functions. Prior to taking up this post he was at Winchester and Eastleigh Healthcare NHS Trust for seven years, holding a variety of roles including Company secretary, Head of Corporate Services and Head of Governance. Prior to joining the NHS in 2002, Peter gained experience working in various departments of central government and in the IT industry.

Dr Trudi Kemp - Director of Strategic Development

Trudi was appointed as Director in April 2009, having first joined St George's Healthcare as consultant in Public Health Medicine in 2002. She is responsible for the development and implementation of the Trust's strategy and business plans, ensuring that the Trust's service developments meet the needs of the populations it serves. She is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at SGUL, is a trainer for registrars and specialists in public health and is involved in undergraduate and postgraduate student teaching.

Qualified in medicine in 1986, she also holds masters degrees in Medical Law and Ethics and in Public Health, and is a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health. She did postgraduate public health training in SW Thames and was previously Consultant in Public Health at Croydon Health Authority.

Jean-Pierre Moser - Director of Communications

Jean-Pierre joined St George's Healthcare in September 2008 and has responsibility for the Trust's corporate communications activity, including media relations, corporate publications, events management, website development, patient information and internal communications.

A member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, Jean-Pierre has over 12 years experience of working in healthcare settings having previously held roles as Head of Corporate Communications and Membership at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain and PR Manager for St Mary's Hospital, London.

Wendy Gay - Director of Human Resources

Wendy was appointed joint director of human resources at St George's Healthcare NHS Trust and St George's, University of London in February 2012. She has over nine years experience working in human resources roles within the NHS; having previously worked at Lewisham Healthcare NHS Trust, Bromley PCT and King's College Hospital NHS Trust. Wendy has also worked in the mental health and charity sectors.
